Lexington, Woodland, Dwight, Monmouth-Roseville chalk up first-round wins in regional play

There were no big surprises regarding Bingo Magic Sports area teams as the like of Lexington, Woodland, Dwight, Monmouth-Roseville, Fieldcrest and Flanagan-Cornell came away with victories and a chance to play another day.

That other day is Wednesday as the boys’ basketball postseason enters regional semifinal round.


Lexington 84, Donovan 22

At Lexington, the regional host Minutemen wasted little time establishing control as they overran Donovan in the Class 1A matchup at The Fort on Monday.

Camden McCue scored on a fast break to put Lexington up 4-2 and start a 19-point run over a four-minute period. The Minutemen led 32-4 when the first quarter concluded.


Lexington led 55-12 at the half and 76-16 through three periods.


Blaine Friedmansky tallied 13 point as 14 Minutemen scored in the game. Leo Davis added 11 points and Joe Steffen netted 10 points. Bo Stutzman scored 9 points and was followed by Bryce Cloudt with 7 points, Joe Cheever and McCue with 6 points each and Gabe Powell and Lucas Wiegand with 5 points apiece.

Lexington (21-11) will face Cissna Park in the first semifinal game Wednesday at The Fort. The second game will pit Ridgeview against GCMS.


Woodland 70, Earlville 25

At Woodland, Nolan Price set a new single-season scoring record for regional host Woodland as he led the Warriors to a 70-25 win over Earlville.



Price scored 17 points, all in the first half, to reach 535 points on the season. Matt Niehaus had the record at 533 set in 1989-90.


Nate Berry paced the Warriors (23-9) with 26 points, Jaron Follmer tallied 11 markers and Grant Wissen added 6.


Woodland will take on Tru-County Conference rival Henry-Senachwine in the semifinal round at the Warrior Dome Wednesday.


Dwight 79, DePue 58

At Dwight, the Trojans advanced the semifinal round of the Class 1A Serena Regional with a 79-58 victory over DePue.



DTHS was able to pull away in the second half. The Trojans led 39-32 at the break and then outscored the Little Giants 20-9 in the third to take control.


Joey Starks had the hot hand for the Trojans (19-12) with 27 points. Collin Bachand added 17 points while Joe Duffy contributed 12 points. Evan Cox chipped in 7 points and Jack Statler had 6 points.


Dwight will face Peru (St. Bede) in the second semifinal game Wednesday at Serena.


Monmouth-Roseville 62, Princeton 34

At Monmouth, five players reached double figures for Monmouth-Roseville as the Titans cruised to a 62-34 decision over Princeton in the opening round of the Class 2A Farmington Regional.



Monmouth-Roseville led 15-13 after the opening lap and then struck for 22 points in taking a 37-21 advantage. The margin grew to 50-34 after holding the Tigers to three points in the third.


Cee Sarcomo led Monmoputh-Roseville (13-17) with 13 points. Clay Casteel, Lars Bergren, Elliott Rogers and Kaden Russell contributed 11 points apiece.


The Titans will take on top-seed Sherrard in the first semifinal game Wednesday at Farmington.


Fieldcrest 89, Lowpoint-Washburn 25

At Minonk, the Knights struck early and often in putting their Class 1A Knoxville Regional game with Lowpoint-Washburn away early. Fieldcrest danced into the semifinal round with an 89-25 victory.



Layten Gerdes scored 15 points in the first quarter as Fieldcrest grabbed a 33-8 lead. Gerdes finished with 26 points. Eli Gerdes added 18 points and Kash Klendworth threw in 17. Lucas Anson scored 12 points.


Fieldcrest (17-13) will face Peoria Heights in the semifinal round Wednesday.


Flanagan-Cornell 47, Hoopeston 45

At Hoopeston, Logan Ruddy had a huge night as he led Flanagan-Cornell to a 47-45 upset of the Class 1A Hoopeston Regional host Cornjerkers Monday.



Ruddy dropped 30 points for the Falcons (10-22), who will face top-seed LeRoy Wednesday. Cody Pinkerton added 11 points.
