Fieldcrest girls, EPG boys suffer hardwood setbacks in nonconference play

Fieldcrest and El Paso-Gridley fell behind early in their respective games Saturday, and neither were able to complete comebacks in nonconference contests.
Midland 62, Fieldcrest 38
At Varna, host Midland jumped out to a comfortable lead in the first quarter and went on to post a 62-38 victory over Fieldcrest in girls’ basketball play.

The Timberwolves jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the first quarter and increased the margin to 36-17 by halftime. Fieldcrest fell behind 55-31 heading into the fourth period.
The Knights, down to just eight healthy players for this one, hit just 34 percent of their shots. TeriLynn Timmermanhot for a game-high 20 points while Ivory Bryant collected 6 points and 8 rebounds and Leah Armes and Kaitlyn Palm each scored 5 points.
Midland’s long-range shooting was lethal as the hosts buried eight triples and shot 43 percent from the field for the game. Anna McGlasson led the way for the Timberwolves with 18 points.
Fieldcrest won the junior varsity contest 31-29 as Armes scored 19 points.
Sacred Heart-Griffin 96, EPG 69
At El Paso, Class 3A foe Sacred Heart-Griffin of Springfield put up more than 20 points in each quarter in recording a palindrome victory host El Paso-Gridley, 96-69.

The Cyclones were able to blow past the Titans on 37 of 55 shooting (67 percent) from the field, including hitting a blistering 11 of 16 from beyond the arc.
El Paso-Gridley also dropped 11 treys but made just 24 field goals overall. Cha’vo Maxon nailed six 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Braden Hayes led the EPG (13-12) charge with 31 points and 5 boards. Jayvion Maxon added 11 points and Jack Hempstead scored 6.
The Cyclones led 22-15 after one period of play, and pushed the margin to 49-39 by halftime. It was a 75-56 game through three frames. Cam Brinkman had 25 points for SHG (11-13).
