Dwight scores league win while Lexington advances in HOIC

Dwight was able to complete a comeback while Lexington scored a boys’ basketball win in McLean County Tournament play on Monday. El Paso-Gridley and Fieldcrest came up short in upset bids in the girls’ bracket.



Dwight 66, Midland 54

At Varna, Dwight trailed for much of its Tri-County Conference game with Midland before overtaking the Timberwolves in the last stanza for a 66-54 victory.


After cutting into the 29-24 halftime margin in the third period, the Trojans trailed 43-42 heading Into the home stretch. Collin Bachand took matters into own hands in the final frame by outscoring Midland 12-11.



Bachand finished with 16 points, but the leading scorer for the Trojans was Joe Duffy with 17 points. Joey Starks added 14 points and was followed by Evan Cox with 8 points, Kayden Wood with 6 and Trevor Jensen with 5 points.


“The victory was a solid road performance for Dwight, showing patience and execution down the stretch,” DTHS head coach Jeremy Connor said.


McLean County Tournament

Lexington 54, Fieldcrest 50

At Bloomington, Lexington came firing in the third quarter to shoot past Fieldcrest in a 4-5 quarterfinal matchup of the McLean County Tournament at the Shirk Center. The Minutemen put up 20 points in the third to turn a 26-24 deficit into a 44-38 advantage.



Bo Stutzman led Lexington with 15 points. Joe Cheever registered a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Blaine Friedmansky tossed in 12 markers. Leo Davis and Drake Hari scored 6 points apiece.


Top-seed LeRoy handled Tri-Valley 44-38 in the first quarterfinal contest. The other two quarterfinal games — No. 2 Eureka against No. 10 El Paso-Gridley, and No. 3 Dee-Mack against No. 6 Tremont — will be Tuesday at the Shirk.


In consolation play, Fisher defeated Flanagan-Cornell 70-62 to advance.


Dee-Mack 42, EPG 39

At Eureka, El Paso-Gridley came so close to pulling off a huge upset, but the Titans could not hold on down the stretch. Second-seed Dee-Mack rallied for a 42-39 win in the girls’ quarterfinal round at Eureka College.



The Chiefs outscored EPG 14-4 in the fourth period to overcome a 35-28 deficit after three quarters. The Titans led 20-11 after the first period.


Edie Stauter led EPG (10-10) with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Myli Ehrhardt contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds and Sophie Hinthorne scored 8 points. Jaelyn Nunley had 15 points and Dalia DeJesus added 11 for Dee-Mack (19-1).


Tri-Valley 47, Fieldcrest 38

Top-seed Tri-Valley outscored ninth-seed Fieldcrest by eight points in the second quarter and went on to post a 47-38 victory over the Knights in a girls’ quarterfinal game at Eureka College.



The Vikings led 11-9 after the opening lap and went up 22-12 at the break. The Knights cut one point off the margin in the third period but could only match Tri-Valley down the stretch.


Macy Gochanour scored 24 points to lead Fieldcrest. Pru Mangan added 10 points. The Vikings were led by Addy Freihaut with 22 points.


In other quarterfinal action, Heyworth rolled past Tremont 57-42 in a 4-5 matchup. Third-seed Eureka defeated No. 6 Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 47-38. Ridgeview claimed a 43-29 decision over Lexington in consolation play.
