Area Roundup: Lexington and United claim two diamond wins over the weekend

Lexington and Monmouth (United) each scored two wins in the first weekend of prep baseball. Prairie Central and West Central each split a pair of contests while Monmouth-Roseville and WFC came up short in their only contests.


Lexington 8, Clinton 0

At Clinton, Blaine Friedmansky belted two home runs and threw a scoreless inning in relief as Lexington cruised to an 8-0 nonconference victory over host Clinton on Friday.



Friedmansky went yard in the second inning to give the Minutemen a 4-0 lead. Seth Williams, the courtesy runner for catcher Cooper Miller, was along for the ride on the two-run shot.


Friedmansky smacked his second two-run shot, this time with Bo Stutzman on base, in the sixth inning.


The Minutemen scored twice in the first inning, twice in the second and once in the third for a 5-0 lead. Friedmansky’s homer in the sixth made it 7-0 and the final marker was chalked up in the seventh.


Friedmansky had two homers, four runs batted in and scored twice to pace Lexington. Miles Lainhart collected a double, single and two RBIs while Braeden Barber also doubled. Cooper Miller, Drake Powell and Kayden Knight each singled while Jack Miller also drove in a run.


Barber got the mound victory after tossing five scoreless innings. He struck out eight, walked one and scattered three hits. Friedmansky and Powell each had one punch out in their respective innings of relief.


Lexington 15, Seneca 5

At Lexington, Blaine Friedmansky added his third home run of the season in helping the host Minutemen dump Seneca 15-5 at Keller Park.


Lexington spotted the Irish a three-run lead in the top of the first inning but came back with a five-spot in the bottom of the half and led the rest of the way. Miles Lainhart doubled in two runs to get LHS on the board and Cooper Miller followed with a two-base hit that tied it at 3-3. Micah Wiltz singled home Miller with the go-ahead run and Jack Miller double in the fifth run of the inning.


Seneca added a run in the second, but the Minutemen answered with three runs, including Friedmansky’s round tripper that led off the inning. Lexington led 9-5 before ending the game with a six-run fifth inning for the 10-run rule triumph. Braeden Barber belted a three-run homer in the inning.


Friedmansky had three hits, including a homer and double, while scoring three times and driving in one for Lexington (3-0). Jack Miller stroked two doubles and drove in a run while Wiltz had two hits and two runs batted in. Barber homered and had three RBIs, and Lainhart and Cooper Miller each had a two-base hit and two RBIs.


Cole Clark went the distance for the win. He allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk to go with four strikeouts.


United 16, Havana 1

At Havana, United got run happy in the final three innings in routing host Havana 16-1 in a nonconference game Friday.



The Red Storm pushed across five runs in the second inning, added six markers in the third frame and tacked on five markers in the fourth for a 16-0 lead. The Ducks got their run in the last of the fourth, but the game ended due to the 15-run rule after four frames.


Ian Leffler had a triple and single and drove in three runs for United. Kellen Boone had two hits and a run batted in while Aiden Martin had a hit and drove in three runs. Collin Leary had a hit while driving in two runs. Wyatt Stockdale and Parker Scott each singled and Chance Stewart, Houston Jackson, Adam Doan, Nolan Jenks and Tucker Smith each recorded a run batted in.


Martin got the win on the bump. He struck out five while allowing four hits and one run.


United 11, South Fulton 0

At Astoria, Chance Stewart nearly hit for the cycle as he paced United to a 11-0 drubbing of host South Fulton Saturday.


Adding to the Red Storm’s dominance was the pitching of Houston Jackson and Wyatt Stockdale, who combined for the one-hit shut out.


United pushed across three runs in the second. Tucker Smith singled to drive in Kellen Boone with the game’s first tally. Smith scored on a throwing error on Egan Marshall’s single and Stewart doubled home Marshall for a 3-0 lead.


Three consecutive singles led the first run of a six-run third inning for United. Marshall doubled in two more runs and Stewart followed with a two-run triple. Stewart scored on a groundout to make it 9-0.


Ian Leffler tripled in a run in the fifth inning, and then scored when Nolan Jenks followed with a sacrifice fly for the final margin.


Stewart had a single, double, triple and drove in three runs for United (2-0). Leffler contributed a triple, single and RBI while Marshall had a double, single and two RBIs. Smith, Stockdale and Jenks each had a hit and RBI while Boone and Collin Leary had one hit apiece. Koen Sperry drove in a run.


Jackson set down seven on strikes and yielded the Rebels’ lone hit in picking up the victory. Stockdale closed out the game by striking out the side in the fifth frame.


Wilmington 18, Prairie Central 13

At Fairbury, Wilmington erupted for 16 runs in a two-inning span to leave town with an 18-13 win over host Prairie Central Friday.



The Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, but the visitors erupted for nine runs in the top of the second inning, and then pushed across seven more markers in the third.


Prairie Central plated seven runs in the fourth inning but got no closer after each side scored two runs in the final frame.


The bright spot for the Hawks was senior Easton Friedman, who had two hits and drove in four runs. He also scored twice. Will Skala had two hits and two runs batted in while Tony Schahrer had two hits and drove in a run. Chase Simpkins contributed a hit and two RBIs.


Schahrer took the loss, giving up nine runs, seven hits and five walks in 1 1-3 innings. Simpkins yielded seven runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out one in two innings of relief. Noah Niemann allowed two runs, four hits and two walks while fanning two in finishing up.


Prairie Central 13, Clifton 0

At Clifton, Prairie Central bounced back from Friday’s loss to shut out host Clifton 13-0. Leading the charge was Will Skala with his four-hit effort.


Skala’s first base hit drove in the Hawks’ first run in the top of the initial stanza. Chase Simpkins smacked a two-run homer two batters later for the 3-0 lead.


Lucas Steidinger, Skala and Collin Hartman had back-to-back-to-back run-scoring singles in the third frame. Steidinger’s safety drove in two runs, as did Noah Niemann’s base hit later in the frame that made it a 9-0 game.


A three-run third and a single tally in the fourth provided the final difference for the Hawks.


Skala had a double and three singles while driving in three runs and scoring three times to pace the Prairie Central (1-1) offense. Simpkins had a homer, single and three runs batted in while Steidinger also drove in three runs with a pair of hits. Hartman had two hits and two RBIs and Mason McCulloh had two hits. Niemann had a hit and drove in two runs while Easton Friedman singled.


Hartman and Nathan Aberle shared pitching duties. Hartman struck out four while allowing two hits and two walks in 2 2-3 innings. Aberle fanned two, walked three and gave up one hit in 2 1-3 innings.


West Central 15, Peoria Heights 0

At Biggsville, Cooper Gibb tossed a two-hitter and received plenty of run support as host West Central rolled Peoria Heights 15-0 on Friday.



Gibb struck out nine, walked one and allowed just two hits in the run-ruled-shortened game.


The Heat scored the game’s first two runs in the second inning. Keaton Reubush singled to plate Parker Anderson, and scored later on a double from Colten Spence.


A four-run third inning pushed the lead to 6-0, and a 9-run fourth brought an end to the game. Spence belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning.


Spence recorded a home run, two-base hit and five runs batted in for West Central. Sam Deverell had a double, single and two RBIs while Jeremy Ford also had two hits. Reubush checked in with a hit and run batted in while Teagan Rodeffer singled and Anderson and Aiden Todd each drove in a run.


North Boone 11, West Central 0

At Biggsville, the Vikings of North Boone made their trip worthwhile by shutting out the host Heat 11-0 in West Central’s second game Friday.


Dalton Hetrick had the lone base hit for the Heat (1-1).


Starter Colten Spence took the loss for West Central, giving up a run, a hit and walking four in three innings. He struck out two. Kamryn Gridley allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks, Grant Vancil yielded three runs on a hit and two walks to go with a punch out, and Aiden Todd struck out one and gave up two hits in relief.


IVC 5, Monmouth-Roseville 3

At Chillicothe, a pair of insurance runs were the difference for Illinois Valley Central as it edged Monmouth-Roseville 5-3 Saturday.



Monmouth-Roseville fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but scored twice in the fifth to make it a one-run difference. Keegan Smith walked with the bases loaded to force home Nick Huston for the Titans’ first run. Landyn Angelo scored on a double play moments later.


The Grey Ghosts tacked on two runs in the home-half of the sixth inning. Monmouth-Roseville tried to rally back in the seventh but fell short.


Ty Moore singled to plate Angelo with one out, but the Titans left the tying runs on base when the game ended.


Moore and Angelo each singled for Monmouth-Roseville (0-1). Moore and Smith each had one RBI.


Clay Casteel took the loss on the bump for the Titans. He gave up three runs (one earned), two hits and two walks while striking out one in his only inning of work. Smith fanned four, walked three and gave up hit in three scoreless innings and Elijah Noel yielded two unearned runs on a hit and walk in two innings.


GSW 5, WFC 2

At Gardner, Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell got on top early but was unable to produce much offense after the first inning and was sent home with a 5-2 loss at the hands of host Gardner-South Wilmington Friday.



Parker Hopkins singled with two outs to drive in Reece Pelnarsh with the first run of the game for the Warriors. Noah Lopez followed with a base hit that scored Nolan Price for a 2-0 WFC lead.


But that was it as the Panthers held WFC scoreless the rest of the way. GSW tied the game in the second and took a 3-2 lead in the third. A pair of runs in the sixth ended the scoring.


Pelnarsh had two hits to lead the WFC (0-1) offense. Brezdyn Simons tripled while Hopkins and Lopez each had run-scoring singles.


Brayden Matsko took the loss on the hill, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out three. Price also fanned three and allowed two runs, two hits and a walk in 1 2-3 innings of relief. Pelnarsh gave up a hit, walk and struck out one in his third of an inning of relief.
