Area Roundup: Dwight and Fieldcrest split diamond contests; M-R Titans, L-R Minutemen nab softball victories

Dwight and Fieldcrest each experienced the joy of victory and the agony of defeat as they split their baseball and softball games Monday. Monmouth-Roseville and Lexington-Ridgeview also garnered wins on the diamond.



Dwight 11, Fieldcrest 1

At Dwight, Taylor Heath spotted Fieldcrest a run in the top of the first, but her Trojans teammates scored twice in the bottom of the frame to lead Dwight to an 11-1 softball victory at DTHS.



Lexi Watkins singled with one out to score TeriLynn Timmerman for Fieldcrest in the first inning. That was it for the Knights as Heath went into shutdown mode by not allowing a base hit the rest of the way. She also set down 15 of the 18 recorded outs on strikes.


Heath struck out six consecutive batters after giving up the Knights’ lone tally. Heath finished with 15 strikeouts while allowing five walks, one hit and one run.


The Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the first on Sarah Parker’s double and Madi Ely’s sacrifice fly. The lead grew to 6-1 after a four-run second inning.


McKenna Woodcock drove in a run with a groundout, Dorothy Wilson stole home and Heath helped her cause with a run-scoring single.


Ely doubled with the bases loaded for the big hit in a three-run fourth inning. Woodcock added a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and Heath stole home with the game-ending run in the sixth.


Woodcock had three hits and drove in two runs while Health helped herself with a double and two singles for Dwight (1-1). Sarah Parker singled, doubled and had a run bated in while Ely had a double and three RBIs. Rian Parker also singled.



Watkins had the lone Fieldcrest base hit.


Fieldcrest 6, Dwight 4

At Dwight, the host Trojans tried to rally but couldn’t get over the hump as Fieldcrest left town with a 6-4 baseball decision at DTHS.


Trailing 5-1 heading into the last of the sixth inning, Dwight was near the final point of having to make its comeback effort. The Trojans loaded the bases with two outs when Ayden Collom’s fly to left was misplayed, allowing three runs to score.



The Knights struck early with two runs in the second inning and a single runs in the third and fifth innings for a 4-0 lead. Zach Overrocker tripled with two outs to drive in the first runs of the game in the second. A two-out single from Lucas May made it 3-0 in the third and Layten Gerdes doubled home Eli Gerdes in the fifth frame.


DTHS responded with its first run in the bottom of the fifth when Joey Starks drove in Collom with a base knock.


An error allowed a run to score for Fieldcrest in the top of the sixth, and a wild pitch allowed the final run to score in the top of the seventh.



Starks had a hit and run batted in and Jacob Wilkey singled for Dwight’s lone base hits. Wilkey took the loss on the hill for the Trojans (0-2) after giving up four runs on six hits and a walk. He struck out three in 4 1-3innings. Evan Cox allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits. He fanned one. Starks finished up, sticking out one his inning of work.


Layten Gerdes had a pair of doubles and drove in a run for Fieldcrest (2-1). May also had two hits and a run batted in while Eli Gerdes and Drew Overrocker collected two hits apiece. Zach Overrocker tripled and drove in two runs.


Lucas Anson got the win after giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks. He fanned five in 5 1-3 innings. Noah Anson finished up, striking out four, walking two and allowing an unearned run.


Monmouth-Roseville 5, Abingdon-Avon 2

At Abingdon, Monmouth-Roseville continued its run through Knox County with a 5-2 softball victory over host Abingdon-Avon on Monday.



Olivia Register was sharp enough in the circle with eight strikeouts in picking up the win. She allowed two runs on five hits and walked three. Both runs were scored in the last inning.


The Titans gave Register a lead to work with before she got the ball. It was Register who produced the first M-R tally with a single to short. An error on the play allowed Nevaeh Stokes to score. Jazmyn Copeland scored on the next playas Rylie Stokes reached on an error.


Nevaeh Stokes singled home Carmyn Way to make it 3-0 in the second frame. Way singled in the fifth inning to plate Rylie Stokes, and Brenna Livingston’s two-out base hit drove in Hannah Stokes for a 5-0 lead through six innings.


Way collected three hits and a run batted in to pace the Monmouth-Roseville (2-0) offense. Register and Copeland had two hits apiece while Rylie Stokes tripled and drove in a run. Nevaeh Stokes and Livingston each had a hit and RBI.


Lexington-Ridgeview 13, Delavan 1

At Delavan, a pair of five-run innings propelled Lexington-Ridgeview to a 13-1 softball victory over host Delavan.



The Minutemen got on the board quickly when Courtney Wesson singled with the the bases loaded and one out in the first inning. Anna Becker walked to force in a run and with Emma Stover at bat, a run scored on a wild pitch before Stover singled in two more for a 5-0 lead.


L-R went up 10-1 in the fourth inning with another five-spot. The Minutemen opened the inning with five straight hits, including a run-scoring double from Brenna Stover. A bases-loaded walk forced in a run and Emma Stover singled in another marker. Reese Seeman’s two-out single plated two for the nine-run difference.


The first of three sixth-inning runs scored on a wild pitch, and then Becker lofted a sacrifice fly to make it 12-1. Kukuck singled to drive in the final tally.


Emma Stover had two hits and drove in three runs to pace the Minutemen (4-0). Kukuck collected two hits and two RBIs. Brenna Stover had a double, single and RBI and Braelynn Gossage had a double and single. Alex Knight singled twice while Seeman had a hit and two RBIs. Wesson had a hit and RBI and Kallie Corkery added a base hit. Becker drove in two runs.


Rylee Kukuck got the win after giving up a run on two hits and three walks. She fanned three in four innings. Hailey Foote allowed two hits in relief.


Mahomet-Seymour 9, Prairie Central 8

At Fairbury, Mahomet-Seymour did all its damage in the final three innings, including pushing across six in the seventh frame to edge past host Prairie Central 9-8 in softball play.



The Hawks had built a 6-0 lead with a trio of two-run innings. Jules Woodrey belted a solo home run to open the scoring in the first inning. Sam Slagel followed with a solo shot for a 2-0 lead.


Kyah Creek and Woodrey delivered run-scoring, two-out base hits in the second for a 4-0 PC lead. Kate Slagel singled ion two runs in the fourth inning to make it 6-0.


Mahomet began its comeback in the fifth frame with a single tally. Two runs were added in the sixth, and the Bulldogs tagged reliever Woodrey for six runs, two of which were earned, in the seventh for a 9-6 advantage.


Lydia Kilgus scored before a Creek single plated Tenly Kurtenbach to close the margin to 9-8 and put the tying run on second and the potential winning run on first. A fly out ended the rally and the game.


Woodrey homered, singled and drove in two runs while Sam Slagel homered, doubled and had one run batted in for the Hawks (2-1). Donley collected three base hits, Creek and two singles and two RBIs and Kate Slagel had a hit and drove in two runs. Kurtenbach and Faith Fields each singled.


Fields got the start in the circle for PC. She allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while setting down 13 Bulldogs on strikes in six innings. Woodrey took the loss after giving up six runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk.


LaSalle-Peru 8, Pontiac 4

At Pontiac, Cayden Masching had three hits and drove in two runs but it wasn’t enough to carry Pontiac in its baseball home-opener as visiting LaSalle-Peru left town with an 8-4 win.



Masching had three of the Indians’ seven hits and two of the four RBIs. Henry DeYoung, Darrin Pierce, Landon Jordan and Carson Walker each singled. Aden Brummel and Ryne Mackinson each had a run batted in.


The Tribe took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Masching led off with a base hit and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to Mackinson.


The Cavaliers responded with a run in the second inning to tie the game, and then pushed across a run in the third before scoring four times in the fourth inning for a 6-1 lead.


PTHS got one run back in the sixth. Brummel’s groundout brought in Masching. The Indians tried to complete a rally in the seventh inning but came up short.


Masching singled to drive in two runs, but that was all the Tribe could manage.


DeYoung took the loss for Pontiac (0-2). He gave up two unearned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three in three innings. Talon Burgess gave up four unearned runs on two hits and a walk while fanning one in one inning and Pierce yielded two runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out two.
